Pope Francis
To love God and neighbor is not something abstract, but profoundly concrete: it means seeing in every person the face of the Lord to be served, to serve him concretely. And you are, dear brothers and sisters, the face of Jesus.
Islander Catholic and the Newman Center seek to answer God’s call to love others in concrete ways through service. Whether we are serving those in need in Corpus Christi through volunteering at the food bank or shelters, the local parishes by helping at their events, or the university family around us every day, we seek to bring God’s love, joy and hope to those around us.
Jesus said, "Whatever you do for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. " (Mt. 25:40)
Service Saturday is our dedicated time to community service. Every first Saturday of the month, we meet for breakfast, share a spiritual reflection to live for the day, and learn about a point of the Catholic Social Teaching related to the work to be done. Then we serve and come back for lunch all together, share about our experience of service and close in prayer.
